The benefits of bones for puppies (and how to give them safely)

Unleash the Power of Raw Meaty Bones for Your Puppy

Since my puppy Taz joined us at the end of January, I thought it might be nice to let you know what I am including in her diet and why.

Raw meaty bones are a must in my pup's diet.  Contrary to popular belief, feeding your puppy raw meaty bones can offer numerous benefits, from improved dental health to a boost in overall nutrition.

You might wonder what age puppies can safely start enjoying raw bones or which bones are best for a young pup - I’ll cover this as well as ALL the benefits. So you can give your pup some teething relief while doing so much more for your puppy’s health.

Let's get the safety stuff out of the way first.

Is it safe to give your puppy bones?

The simple answer is YES! You can even introduce raw meaty bones during the weaning process at 6 weeks.

However, you need to make sure that you are giving the right bones and not just any old bone.

When choosing bones for puppies we want to start with soft bones that are easy to digest and easy to chew.  My go-to are duck neck, feet or wings.

You may need to teach your puppy to chew these and not try and swallow whole. This is really easy just keep hold of it and encourage them to chew it whilst in your hands. Never leave your puppy alone with a bone always supervise just in case. The biggest no-no is cooked bones, never give these as they can splitter and can be a choking risk.

Let's dive into the world of raw feeding and discover why raw meaty bones are a fantastic addition to your puppy's meal plan.

1. Dental Health:

One of the most significant advantages of raw meaty bones is their ability to promote excellent dental health in puppies. Chewing on raw bones helps remove plaque and tartar buildup, preventing dental issues such as gum disease and tooth decay. I also serve them really cold as they work in the same way as a babies teething ring, they can help soothe sore gums. This in turn may save your furniture or shoes. The gnawing action also strengthens your puppy's jaw muscles and reduces the risk of tooth misalignment.

2. Nutritional Benefits:

Raw meaty bones are packed with essential nutrients that contribute to your puppy's overall health and well-being. They provide high-quality protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals vital for growth and development. Unlike heavily processed commercial dog foods, raw bones offer a natural and bioavailable source of nutrients that are easily absorbed by your puppy's body.

3. Mental Stimulation:

Feeding raw meaty bones isn't just about nutrition—it's also about mental stimulation and enrichment for your puppy. The act of gnawing and tearing at a bone engages your puppy's natural instincts and provides valuable mental stimulation. This can help alleviate boredom and prevent destructive behaviours, keeping your puppy happy and entertained. It also helps release natural serotine (the calming hormone) which will help your puppy settle.

4. Improved Digestion:

Raw meaty bones contain enzymes and probiotics that support healthy digestion in puppies. By incorporating raw bones into your puppy's diet, you can help maintain a balanced gut microbiome and reduce the risk of digestive issues such as constipation or diarrhoea. Additionally, the natural fibres in raw bones can help regulate bowel movements and promote optimal gut health.

5. Stronger Immune System:

A nutritious diet plays a crucial role in strengthening your puppy's immune system, and raw meaty bones are a fantastic addition to support immune function. The vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants found in raw bones help bolster your puppy's defences against infections and diseases, keeping them healthy and resilient.

6. Weight Management:

Raw meaty bones can also be beneficial for managing your puppy's weight. Since they are rich in protein and low in carbohydrates, they provide a satisfying and nourishing meal without excess calories. Additionally, the chewing action required to consume raw bones can help your puppy feel fuller for longer, reducing the likelihood of overeating or begging for extra snacks.

Final words

Raw meaty bones can be a valuable addition to your puppy's diet, providing numerous health benefits and promoting their overall well-being. By incorporating raw feeding into your puppy's meal plan, you can support their dental health, provide essential nutrients, stimulate their mind, and strengthen their immune system. With proper supervision and consideration, raw meaty bones can help your puppy thrive and live a happy, healthy life.
